Round window

Christuskirche | Ahaus

The basic symbolism of the round window of the Christuskirche Ahaus can be understood on several levels. The Christian cross is central to the design; this curved, dynamic cross is formed by the window frame and characterizes the design.

Here, the cross is to be perceived in its Christian symbolism in many different ways. The depiction reflects the symbol of the church. The cross is placed in the context of the gold and silver-colored balls. These are varied in size, shape and color and are to be understood as a reference to the symbol of the Evangelische Christus-Kirchengemeinde.

In this way, the design takes up the community’s basic idea of togetherness in diversity. It pays tribute to the different places of origin and migration histories of the parishioners.

In this context, the round window as a whole can also be understood as an abstract representation of the globe. In this case, the window frames function as the celestial equator and the prime meridian. The playfully arranged spheres are an expression of diversity and focus on the Christian cross.

In the technical implementation, the color selection of gold and silver is chosen in such a way that a multifaceted play of light and color is staged in an incident light situation through different reflection angles. On the other hand, the cross in the design is to be understood as “paths to God”. Despite all external influences and uncertainties, these lead through ups and downs, mountains and valleys.

Process

From design to unveiling

This closes the circle and the symbolism of the round window creates a direct link to the bronze relief of the entrance gate. A relief-like fused glass is used to pick up on this symbolism. This forms the background and is characterized by its elevations and distortions.

This effect is emphasized and enhanced by a mirror attached to the back. In addition, the mirror creates a brilliant incident light situation independent of the transmitted light, which works in combination with the dimensionality of the design in both day and night light. To enhance this brilliance, a spotlight is directed onto the window at night.

Ahaus history

The historical and social origins of the Protestant community in Ahaus are also honored in this design. Its foundation during the heyday of the textile industry is taken up in a charming detail. The fused glass used imitates a fabric-like texture in addition to the various elevations and indentations. The glass looks like woven jute and was specially developed for the round window.
