Principal pieces

Church Ahaus

The “first” and “noblest” piece of furniture in any church is called a “principal piece”.

We have developed four new principal pieces for the Christian church:
An altar table will form the center of the room in the future, the historic high altar will be refurbished and given a slim pedestal, and the pulpit and baptismal font will be redesigned.

All four pieces of furnishings radiate lightness and value in equal measure, harmonize with each other and refer to each other in form and material.

Baptismal font

The new baptismal font matches the shape and material of the other furnishings and can be placed anywhere in the church.

An internal glass plate serves as a storage surface. The baptismal bowl itself is generously proportioned and is made of fused, textile glass. Its underside is mirrored and the moving water creates attractive lighting effects.

Altar table

The church will have an altar table on which the Bible and Easter candle can be placed and around which the congregation can gather for communion. The table has a square basic shape and can change places as required.

The table top is made of wood and has a light-colored stone veneer that references the pulpit. The curved table legs echo the shape of the arches in the high altar. They are also made of wood and, like the edge of the table, are clad in brushed brass.

High altar

The historic altarpiece with the four evangelists and the figure of Christ was created almost 100 years ago by the architect Lenz from Münster in collaboration with the sculptor Mazzotti. It marked the change from the Reformed to the Lutheran confession and is the only piece of furniture from the time before the destruction caused by the war.

Its sprinkling and the carved figures are refurbished and backed with colored glass to show off the figures even better. The base will be replaced by a simple wooden plinth clad in brushed brass.

Pulpit

The new pulpit is significantly slimmer and more open than the previous one. It visually emerges from the floor in front of the altar area and consists of a simple sandstone block.

A pane of laminated textile glass will be attached to the side of the window, which will serve as fall protection and is reminiscent of the round window and the stele in front of the church in terms of its materiality. The front will also be clad in brushed brass and will provide an elegant backdrop for future paraments in the colors of the church year.
